5th Saffron Walden scouts went on an international trip to Ypres to learn about the First World War and celebrate scouting achievements.

During half term, 92 members of the 5th Saffron Walden Scout Group embarked on a four-day trip to Ypres in Belgium.

The group included scouts aged six to 14, along with young leaders and adult volunteers.

During the trip, the scouts visited Essex Farm Cemetery, the Vancouver Memorial, Tyne Cot, and Langemark German Cemetery, which offered poignant moments of reflection.

They also explored the ramparts on foot and completed a treasure hunt around Ypres, blending history with adventure.

Dom Moloney, group lead volunteer, said: “The trip exemplified the values of Scouting: remembrance, resilience, and community.

“It was a journey of growth, gratitude, and joy for all involved.

“The youngest Beavers, just six years old, took part with enthusiasm and respect.

“The scouts did the people of Saffron Walden proud.”

A visit to the In Flanders Fields Museum deepened the scouts’ understanding of the war’s impact, while visits to Sanctuary Wood and Hill 60 gave them a visceral experience of trench life.

The trip also included lighter activities such as Halloween games, a windswept visit to the beach Dunkirk, and a Belgian chocolate-making workshop in Adinkerk, where everyone got to make and taste their own creations.

The highlight of the visit came at the Menin Gate, where scouts Matty, Woody, and James served as colour guard during the Last Post ceremony.

Three other members, Rose, Mark, and Posy, laid a wreath in memory of the fallen and the group posed for a photo with the buglers.

Ceremonies were held on the ferry home to invest new scouts and leaders, present Chief Scout Awards, and recognise adult volunteers with Long Service honours.

One of the group’s most dedicated leaders, Mole, received the Bar to the Award for Merit, marking 25 years of exceptional service to scouting in Essex.

The trip ran smoothly compared to the group’s previous trip to Normandy, which was delayed 24 hours at Dover.
